Experience Preferred vs. Experience Required

There is a difference between "experience required" and "experience preferred". "Experience required" means that you will not even be considered for the position if you are a new grad. This is also apparent with job postings that say "new grads will not be considered" or "no new grads need apply". However, if the job posting states "experience preferred", then new grads can apply. When I was a new grad, I filled out many applications. Most of the interviews that I went on were for positions that were listed as "experience preferred". As long as new grads are able to take the time and apply, there is a chance. So do not be afraid to apply when it says "experience preferred." If you are able to land an interview, great. Remember that you will most likely be up against nurses who have experience, so be sure to bring your A game. Dress for success. Research the facility. Know the mission and values. Practice interview questions. And above all show your loyalty. Most facilities do not want to take a chance on new grads, because they believe that after they get one year's experience they will leave. This is why many facilities are starting contracts. Make a commitment to work there for at least 2 years.
